Every quilter has a few fabrics that feel like old friends—the ones we keep reaching for, the ones we hesitate to cut because we love them so much. When I think about what really pulled me into quilting, it wasn’t just the patterns or the techniques. It was the fabric.

In the beginning, I didn’t know much about designers or collections. I just knew what I was drawn to. I found myself picking up floral and light-coloured fabrics, running my fingers over the prints and imagining how they might look stitched together. Even before I understood how to read a pattern, I understood how fabric made me feel.
Over time, I started to notice patterns in my choices. I almost always reached for tiny florals and low-volume prints that play nicely in the background. These fabrics gave my quilts a certain voice—soft and nostalgic, or bright and modern, or somewhere in between. Choosing fabric became one of my favourite parts of the process, a little moment of creative joy before the first cut is ever made.
Of course, not every fabric pull has been perfect. I’ve had stacks that looked beautiful together on the table but didn’t quite sing once they were sewn into blocks. I’ve second‑guessed myself, swapped prints halfway through a project, and learned that sometimes the “odd” fabric—the one that doesn’t seem to match—is exactly what a quilt needs to come alive.
Today, when I walk into a quilt shop or browse online, I still feel that same spark I felt at the beginning. I look for fabrics that tell a story: maybe they remind me of a person I’m sewing for, a season, a memory, or simply a mood I want the quilt to have. I love mixing old favourites from my stash with new finds, letting each quilt become a little time capsule of what I was drawn to in that moment.
The fabrics I choose are a big part of what makes T’s Quilty Corner feel like “me.” In future posts, I’ll be sharing more about how I put together color palettes, how I mix prints, and some of my go‑to fabric combinations for different kinds of quilts—baby gifts, cozy throws, and more.
Until then, I’d love to know: what kinds of fabrics are you most drawn to—bright and bold, soft and subtle, or something in between?
